Just the Facts

National Assessment of Service and Community Engagement

  • The percentage of students who reported engaging in community service during their time at Siena increased significantly, up from 49% in 2009 to 64% in 2013.
  • Siena’s Quantitative POP Score (which combines an institution’s rate, frequency, and depth of service into one score) nearly doubled, increasing from a 14 in 2009 (indicating low service, and below the national average of 17) to a 26 in 2013 (indicating moderate service and well above the national average).
  • As evidence that Siena’s service-learning and community engagement curriculums are continuously expanding, the percentage of students who reported participating in service as part of a course increased from 14% in 2009 to 36% in 2013.
  • Siena students increased their rate, frequency, and depth of involvement in every one of the nine need areas between 2009 and 2013. Specifically, in the area of Youth, Siena students’ POP score increased from 32 (“moderate” service) in 2009 to a whopping 73 (“impressive” service) in 2013.
  • Of the Siena students who engage in community service, 29% of them report participating in community service, on average, for more than 20 hours per month. This is an increase of 20 percentage points from 2009 (9%).
